Formula

Reading time = words ÷ 200 · Speaking time = words ÷ 130
  • Words are counted as groups of letters or numbers separated by spaces, which works for English, Gujarati and Hindi.
  • Sentences end with . ! ? or the danda (।).

Worked example: Checking an essay limit

Your assignment must be 800–1,000 words. Paste your draft: if it shows 1,124 words, you know to trim about 125 words. At 200 words per minute it takes roughly 5½ minutes to read.

Common word-count limits

Typical lengths to aim for:

  • School essays: 250–500 words
  • Blog posts that rank well: 1,000–2,000 words
  • A one-minute speech: about 130 words
  • A press release: 300–500 words

Frequently asked questions

Does it count Gujarati and Hindi words correctly?

Yes. Words are separated by spaces, and characters are counted the way readers see them, including conjuncts and matras.

Is my text saved?

Your draft is kept only in your own browser so it is still there if you refresh. It is never uploaded. Press Clear to remove it.

How is reading time calculated?

We use an average silent reading speed of 200 words per minute and a speaking speed of 130 words per minute.

Are numbers counted as words?

Yes. A number such as 2026 counts as one word.
