How to use the Gold Calculator
- Select the purity of gold jewellery (22K 916 for standard ornaments, 18K for diamond jewellery, or 24K for pure coins/bars).
- Enter today’s 24K gold market rate per 10 grams and the total weight in grams or tola.
- Enter the making charges quoted by the jeweller (either as a percentage or flat rate per gram).
- Check your itemised bill on the right with pure gold cost, making charges, and 3% GST breakdown.
Formula
- 22K (916) = 91.67% pure gold (22 ÷ 24)
- 18K (750) = 75.00% pure gold (18 ÷ 24)
- 1 Tola = 11.6638 grams (traditional) or 10 grams (metric market trade)
- GST on gold jewellery in India is 3% (1.5% CGST + 1.5% SGST)
Worked example: 10 grams of 22K Gold Jewellery at ₹75,000/10g with 10% Making
24K rate per gram = ₹7,500. For 22K, effective rate per gram = ₹7,500 × (22 ÷ 24) = ₹6,875/gram.
Pure gold cost for 10g = 10 × ₹6,875 = ₹68,750.
Making charges at 10% = ₹6,875. Total taxable price = ₹75,625.
Adding 3% GST (₹2,268.75) gives a final bill of ₹77,893.75.
Understanding BIS Hallmark & 6-digit HUID in India
Under Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) regulations, hallmarked gold jewellery in India carries a mandatory 6-digit alphanumeric HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification) code stamped alongside the BIS logo and purity mark (e.g., 22K916, 18K750). Always demand a laser-stamped HUID code on your invoice to ensure authenticity.
Tips to avoid overpaying on gold jewellery
Jewellers often quote varying making charges and wastage fees. Keep these points in mind:
- Always ask for a separate breakup of gold rate, making charges, and GST on the invoice.
- Verify that the 24K baseline rate matches the day’s official bullion rate in your city.
- Remember that stone weight should be deducted from total weight before computing gold cost.
- Making charges are negotiable — compare rates across jewellers before finalizing.
