How to use the Number to Words

  1. Type a number or amount. Commas and decimals are allowed (for example 12,50,000.50).
  2. The amount appears in words in every format.
  3. Use the Copy button next to the format you need and paste it into your cheque, invoice or document.

Formula

1,00,000 = one lakh · 1,00,00,000 = one crore
  • In the international system, 1,000,000 = one million and 1,000,000,000 = one billion.
  • Paise are rounded to two decimal places in the cheque formats.

Worked example: Writing ₹12,50,000.50 on a cheque

English: Rupees Twelve Lakh Fifty Thousand and Fifty Paise Only.

International system: “One million two hundred fifty thousand point five zero”.

Hindi: बारह लाख पचास हज़ार रुपये और पचास पैसे मात्र.

Tips for writing cheques

Banks may reject a cheque if the words and figures do not match. To stay safe:

  • Start writing right at the beginning of the line so nothing can be added before the amount.
  • End the amount with “Only” and draw a line through any empty space.
  • Make sure the amount in words exactly matches the amount in figures.
