How to use the Time Calculator

  1. Choose a mode: Add / subtract durations, find the time between two clock times, or add hours to a clock time.
  2. Enter hours, minutes and seconds, or pick the clock times.
  3. The result appears instantly in hours and minutes, along with decimal hours for timesheets.

Formula

Total seconds = hours × 3600 + minutes × 60 + seconds
  • If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes it is on the next day (for example a night shift).
  • Decimal hours = total minutes ÷ 60 (for example 7 h 30 m = 7.5 hours).

Worked example: A night shift

A shift starts at 22:30 and ends at 06:15. Because the end is earlier than the start, the calculator counts across midnight: 7 h 45 m, or 7.75 decimal hours.

Adding 2 h 45 m and 1 h 30 m gives 4 h 15 m.

Decimal hours for payroll

Many payroll and billing systems use decimal hours. 15 minutes = 0.25 h, 30 minutes = 0.5 h and 45 minutes = 0.75 h. So 8 h 20 m is 8.33 hours, not 8.20. The “Hours” box shows this conversion automatically.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add hours and minutes?

Add the minutes first; every 60 minutes becomes one hour. Then add the hours. The calculator does this for you, including seconds.

How do I calculate hours worked overnight?

Use “Time between”. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the duration is counted across midnight.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. For example, 45 minutes ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours.

Can the result be negative?

Yes, when you subtract a longer duration from a shorter one. The result is shown with a minus sign.
